Dead Bet Office

October 2004

Soto Clemente Cultural Center

This was one of ten rooms in a haunted house sponsored by Halloween Adventure.
It was produced and organized by Publicity Outfitters and Trav S.D. and ran for two weeks leading up to Halloween night at the Soto Clemente Cultural Center located in the Lower East Side of NYC.
Dead Bet Office was a living dead office created by the technical team of 31 Down. This installation was a recreation of Mike Sharpie's Private Detective Office. Mike Sharpie was murdered and tour groups that walked through the room were left interactive clues as to who the murderer was.
The over all effect of the room was controlled by switch sensors underneath the rug in the room. When passers by stepped on a switch, a louder-than-hell sound was emitted from the walls and ceiling of the room. If you picked up the phone a creepy voice would call out to you. Maps on the walls were coated in blood, snapshots hung as negatives throughout the room. Mike's dead outline lay scribed on the floor in white-out. On Halloween night, a living dead secretary was added for ultimate scares.
